Screening for sickle cell anemia is available in a lot of places. In the United States of America, 44 of the states there provide screening for newly born babies. The blood sample would be taken to a laboratory to where a technician would screen for hemoglobin S. If the test shows positive then there will be another set of tests to determine if the person have one or two sickle cell genes. For confirmation a sample of blood is examined under a microscope for the search of any sickle cells, also if the person has the disease they would undergo a blood test for anemia -- a low blood cell count.
